Foul, foul weather. Lots of emails from our lovely public ‘are you still performing?’ – answer ‘we’ll try!’
First stop the Queens Oak, fantastic setting, with a good natured crowd (friends old and new) well covered by brollies and coats. Into the pub, of course, with the NEW squire sticking his head out to say ‘erm not sure….’. All turned out well tho’ and we got underway in a light downpour to the usual badinage with unfrocked and frocked members of Kennet MM (inc Guest Fool of the Day Peter De Courcy). Sprightly set, avoiding puddles and potholes, and managing lines very well. Our new lad, Mark, doing really well. Also soggy musicians, stoic in their condoms. Fool happily bellowing, jigs and then the eagerly anticipated N Hants Mummers Play. Generous contribution to the collection from the, by now, large and happy crowd.
For our Mummers this is the BIGGEST day of the calendar and there is no holding them back! No subtle nuances here! Great stuff. Especially for Phil, starring as Santa for the first time. We would have liked a beer…..
Onwards through the clearing rain to our home pub, the ‘Dog and Partridge’. We expected the same size crowd as last year – huge. The Fool had even brought a step ladder to better broadcast to the crowd. Deserted. Hardly a soul out and about…… Fortunately the pub then emptied as we got underway with a good tights set, Christmas tunes, jigs and much bantering with our knowledgeable crowd.
Mumming gets no better than this… J ! A final and deliciously chaotic ‘Bonnie Green Garters’ for dancers, mummers and anyone who fancied a go concluding a really good day out!
