290919 Swallowfield Church Anniversary and The Crown

The 750th anniversary of All Saints Church! A nice invite from Rev Paul and Andy A to the Harvest Thanksgiving Service. A welcoming and packed church for a full on service led by Paul , helped by the delightful Academy Brass ensemble (is that the right word?).

An old document and picture had been recently found detailing a previous Harvest Festival at All Saints. Very festive! This included a procession from the Church to the village centre, including a cart laden with Harvest donations. Today we would recreate the procession – the congregation, Academy Brass and Yateley MM. A nice amble through the landscaped fields of the historic Swallowfield Park led by the Band and then YMM – assorted ladies needed little encouragement to join in. All rather nice!

We processed to the Crown, under threatening skies, where we were treated to a pint, barbecue and pie. Dodging showers we performed noisily to the congregation and other locals, even enticing Rev Paul to perform a convincing ‘Shepherd’s Hey’ to his surprised flock! The Horse was in frisky mood and was persistent in the chase of a number of lady ‘runners’….to everyone’s amusement.

The lads were quite excited by the cart in the picture of the procession, we are very familiar with the Saddleworth Rushcart event which is pulled by morris types all over the place before ending up at St Chads in Saddleworth. Perhaps next year a cart could be procured for an annual procession? Do it twice and it becomes a tradition.

A different and very nice day.
