Gloomy, cold and dark – but no rain! A big turnout from the lads at the welcoming Cricks (Tribute was good) but with no audience. A few strolling punters, hunched against the cold like Lowry figures, paused briefly before striding on. Landlady and friend came out tho’ AND provided a generous jug, thank you! Our ladies wisely stayed in…side.
The Fool’s cheery suggestion that our musicians cast aside their fleeces was met with scowls and mild curses – bless ‘em, they did brilliantly all evening despite the cold weather.
The lads soon warmed up and the squire set a programme of ‘not danced much’ dances including the Poacher (bit creaky), Corporal Lanos (ditto), Abnalls, Beansetting (oops but OK), Black Joker (Bled) to much hilarity and whooping. Baz and Max did Ladies Pleasure (Bled) with David playing. Muzza appeared, always a welcome sight.
Onto to the Waggon & Horses (great range of beers, some of us not moving on from a delicious Flower Pots Brewery brew) to a similarly sized audience. Well warmed up, we bellowed and steamed away surprising passersby with our passion and gusto, especially when we put two sides up for Bampton and with a magnificent closing Shepherd’s Hey.
We were saying goodbye to Max Haynes and Jennii Mcmahon tonight who move away north and west. We will miss them both and the Squire spoke sincerely on behalf of us all when he thanked Max for his contributions of vitality and teaching. We hope that we will see lots of Max and Jennii – to make sure that they don’t forget us the Squire presented a framed montage of Max and Jennii photos with individual words on the back (thank you Roderick Crane and Jinny Crane for creating this!).
The brute sulked all evening and declined to come out and play.
The W&H is built for a good ‘apres morris’ session and we filled the pub with warmth, bodies, music, banter and song with fine contributions from Ian, Max, Andy and Muzza’s lovely ‘Dead Dog Scrumpy’ ringing out. The locals loved it at all…..maybe!
A brilliant evening form such an unpromising start – sad to see Max & Jennii go but we’re glad that their last evening was a good ‘un!
