04062026 – 09062026 “Bish Bosh! We’re off to Den Bosch” Day Five 08062026 – Nijmegen  and Into the Unknown

Nijmegen was an unknown destination for us, so a new adventure awaited….

Normal start, bacon rolls for breakfast, 10am departure from campsite to catch 10.23 bus, IY loses hat on bus (!!), Baz buys Starbucks venti in station then onto train to Nijmegen, with a walk to the market square, depositing ourselves at one of the many cafes, then set up for some dancing. Much creaking from some weary limbs…day four dancing.

This outburst of exercise had to be followed by food, and as there was a giant van situated in the square,we all revived ourselves by mass Kibbeling. Delicious!!

After this well deserved rest, we headed down to the river and found a stone maze with a German family sat nearby so we danced, to their complete bemusement.

After walking back to the main riverside bars we took our lives in our hands and danced in the road for the audience with buses trying to run us over every few minutes.

Then we were guided to a brewery (!). Great place. A couple of the lads headed off to a big ole Church in the centre. Our organist spent some time with the local organ tender and a model organ. Even the non-organist enjoyed the tech chat.

Joyce from Utrecht Morris turned up and joined us for the rest of the day as she lives in Nijmegen.

There was a busload of German teachers (~60; they taught around 800 students) from just across the border, so the Horse went wild while we did Sweet Jenny/Jenny Lind/Glorishers. They graciously bought us beers! Along the same theme, the Squire decided he needed a stock of the 10% beers so forced himself to purchase some!

Before we could leave, there was a group of American healthcare professionals for whom we performed a quick Jolly Jack.

Finally a walk back to the station and caught a stopping train to Den Bosch.

Then we had a dilemma – the original plan was to get off the Den Dungen bus early and visit one of the cafe/restaurants near the river, but they were closed on a Monday so Plan B was to buy our own food to eat back at the campsite which Ian Y and Ross did in a minimart at the station. Several lasagnes, Indonesian specials and a Spagbol were heated up and consumed voraciously with various breads. Unsurprisingly, beers (and coffee) were also partaken. Some more Bols/Whiskey and Port were also enjoyed before the call of the beds finally won out.

Another great day enjoyed by all.
