24052022 Cricketers and Waggon & Horses, Hartley Wintney

Beautiful, cool and sunny evening. Two lovely pubs that we have always danced.

Very few people out and about at the Cricketers. It is amazing the difference that one enthusiastic audience member can make to the evening. We had one! Kai loved it and followed us to the Waggon and Horses later.

A good turnout from the lads and our WAGs and some crisp dancing. Landlord bitter was in good form.

Onto the Waggon and Horses. Again, very few people about initially. It seems strange that the social media interest in our performances rarely results in people coming out to watch…perhaps Facebook stats are not that reliable! The crowd grew as people came out of the pub, cars pulled up and passersby (or passerbys?) stopped drawn by noisy shouting and the unique blend of dance, music, songs, bells and untrammelled joy that is the heart of the Morris. Some pretty good dancing in two sets with jigs. The beast appeared, cause the normal havoc on both sides of the road, contentedly chasing assorted “runners” through the pub. A lovely barmaid remained fearful while collecting glasses outside all evening! He was sad as there were no horses at the Waggon and Horses!

The pub very generously provided beer and we retired into the pub for a short apres Morris session.

Plus a few quotes from the audience at the Waggon and Horses:

– “best Morris dancing we’ve seen”

– “you look like you’re having so much fun!”

Great pubs, great evening.
