01012023 Cricketers, New Years Day

Big, good humoured crowd were waiting for us in the thin winter sunshine, happy with that as many of New Year Day displays have been soggy. Lots of families, morris folk and many, many old friends, lots lined up on the raised bank, like a ‘coconut shy’ observed someone. Lovely, lovely to see you all.

Our programme featured lots of dances with Christmas tunes, all rather lovely with (again) some impromptu bursts of song. Love it. Danced with gusto and joy, if not to a fine degree of precision, you know what I mean…. Horse appeared to cheers and shrieks. Our generous crowd seemed to enjoy our stuff!

Mummers were in lively form and, as usual, noisy. Little Swing Swing remembered his family this time, but made up for it by stumbling over his lines and not taking his bells off. Baboon. Bold Slasher slashed his sword a little too wildly and almost had a shrieking audience member… Legs amputated, aliens removed, sons resurrected and song sung we completed our Mumming for this season. To much applause and nice comments.

Sone jugs of beer appeared (thank you Cricks) and swiftly disappeared much to the chagrin of the parched Fool! David and Sheila brought their classic vehicle, wisely parked up early as it has the turning circle of a 747…

Lots of ‘goods’. Good to see Peter (in kit and in good form) and Lynn on a flying visit from Dorset, Peter was immediately chucked into the performance dancing, announcing the Mummers and offering a subtly nuanced performance as the ‘Parson’s Nose’. Good to see Paul L dancing after his op, with not too many winces and grimaces – even jigging. Good to see our Mike Musgrove out, bringing another member of his  family. We nearly saw Kev J, but domestic complications prevailed – cats, fleas…

A great start to the New Year. Happy New Year Everyone from all of us!
