What does a Morris Man do?

We entertain: The Yateley Morris Men have been dancing and entertaining the public since 1975.
Every Tuesday night from May to September we dance out at local pubs and towns.
We also dance at Fetes, Folk Festivals, Beer Festivals.
After all this strenuous dancing we have been known to drink beer. On Tuesday nights or on dedicated tours of local towns (it’s not compulsory).
After practice we usually retire next door to the Dog & Partridge, Yateley, for some much needed rehydration.

We have a beast, the famous Yateley Highwayman’s Horse.
A mischevious creature who can be hard to control and spreads chaos wherever he goes.

We travel abroad to dance, most recently to The Netherlands, Spain, and the Czech Republic. We’ve always had a great reception wherever we go..
We practice every Tuesday evening starting in mid-September at St Peters Church, Church End Green, Reading Rd, Yateley GU46 7LR starting at 8pm. The first practice night is a dedicated introductory taster session for anyone thinking of joining us: but new members are welcome at any time

FAQs
Morris dancing – what’s all that about then?
It’s England’s national dance and a growing activity in the UK and abroad. The dances are lively, varied and interesting. There are different styles, Yateley specialise in one called Cotswold.
Why should I have a go?
The same reason as we do – it’s a lot of fun. We have a load of laughs together as we practice and then perform in some great places. It is also really satisfying to learn and master something new – especially something a bit different. Good friendships are made.
Looks complicated, do I have to have any experience?
No, most of us started from scratch, usually with two left feet! We practice during the winter taught by our own foremen (both dancers and musicians) and then perform in public during the rest of the year. Gets you fit as well.
Is it expensive?
Cheap as chips. Most of our expenses (such as hiring a hall for our practices in the winter) are covered by collections and fees when we perform. There is no subscription fee.
I will have to make a big commitment?
No, you’re in control. We dance on Tuesday evenings at good local pubs and the lads always look forward to that. We also do days out at weekends and aim to have at least a couple of weekends away camping (or similar) every year.
I play a musical instrument – can I join too?
Yes please! We are always looking for new musicians to join our talented accompanists. You will need to be a competent player of an instrument suitable for Morris dancing, willing to learn our tunes and play as team member.
Sounds good! What do I do next?
